History of our school
Mr Costello who used to be the principal of our school came in to talk about the history of Scoil Íosagáin. We learned a lot from him.
Scoil Íosagáin is very old. It was founded in 1949 by the Christian Brothers. The boys went home for lunch because the day was so long. They did not finish school until 3.30 pm. For the boys who couldn’t go home because their houses were a bit far, a lady came into the school and sold soup for 50p. That lady’s name was Mrs White.
Scoil Íosagáin used to show a film every Friday in the hall to fundraise for the school. All of the boys used to walk to school. There were no women teachers in the school back then. The classes were huge-some teachers had 50 pupils. They sat in rows not in groups like us and did a lot of writing. I’m glad I’m in Scoil Íosagáin now and not back in 1949!
